Walter and Andrée de Nottbeck had great foresight in their choice to support Baltic Sea related basic research. The significance of marine research and its social relevance have increased with the growing interest in the environmental issues of the Baltic Sea.
The Nottbeck foundation prioritizes Tvärminne based research, which contributes to understanding the structure and function in complex marine ecosystems.
Presently the focus of research is in understanding functional biodiversity, biogeochemistry and long-term changes in the marine environment in relation to eutrophication and climate change. An important part of this work is modelling and synthesis based on long-term data.

New Research Initiative
Walter and Andrèe de Nottbeck Foundation has, since its establishment for over 50 years ago, had a crucial role in supporting marine research at Tvärminne Zoological Station. Now we want to help create prerequisites for new groundbreaking research at the station. The idea is to integrate research in marine ecological, biogeochemical and atmospheric processes in order to increase our understanding of interactions between biodiversity and climate.
An interdisciplinary Centre for coastal ecosystem and climate research has been established in Tvärminne. This requires new infrastructure and new personnel for measuring the greenhouse gases both in the sea and in the atmosphere. At the same time, it is necessary to build up the capacity to connect these measurements with the changes in the sea. This important initiative requires larger financial muscles.
